Martin Luther King Day

17 January, 2010, Sunday

Martin Luther King was a clergyman and is regarded to be a great American owing to his tireless efforts in winning civil rights by nonviolent means. He was assassinated in 1968, but his memorial services are seen as a mark on January 15.

This day was then changed to January 3rd in 1986 and was observed as a national holiday. Martin Luther King was one of the great black Americans who crusaded to acquire civil rights for blacks.

He preached nonviolence identical to the path adopted by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian nation. Martin Luther King campaigned and spoke tirelessly to the United States to free the blacks and to release the laws and traditions imposed on them.

Martin Luther king ceaselessly struggled for the blacks who had the status of being second class citizens. These laws stated that they take back seats in the buses.

Only in the early 1960s, with the guidance of Martin Luther King, Jr, the African Americans started with marches, boycotts and other nonviolent forms of protest in the aim of demanding equal treatment and to put an end to racial discrimination.

Martin Luther king constantly demanded equality and that the people should be judged by their character and not by their skin color. However, the laws came declaring prohibition regarding discrimination in education, public accommodations, housing and employment.

The world was enveloped in shock when Martin Luther king was assassinated in 1968, and since then his birthday was marked with special memories. The third Monday of January is observed as a federal holiday in the honor of Martin Luther King.

On this day, even if one is very busy they can send flowers on Martin Luther King’s day as a wish for the liberation received. Martin Luther worked for the rights of black and he could accomplish it through non-violence. His silence won him the deserved rewards and even today many send flowers on Martin Luther King’s day as a respect for his sincere efforts.
