Aloha Festivals

12 March, 2010, Friday

Aloha festival is celebrated at Hawaii. This began in 1946 and is well-known as it honored the heritage of these islands. The first week of this festival is called as Aloha week and this included pageants, parade and hula shows.

In 1991, this festival was expanded and now the same event is celebrated for two months encompassing six islands with 300 events. Many volunteers work to stage these events and this festival is truly a great honor as millions of people attend every year.

This festival begins in august and is celebrated until mid-October. The opening ceremony takes place in downtown Honolulu at Iolani palace. The other ceremonies follow such as the hula performances including live musical performance, arts and crafts.

Each island that celebrates aloha festival chooses a queen, king, prince, princess and attendants. The selected people are Hawaiian descent and the inauguration of each island is a wonderful affair. The conch shell is blown, kahili bearers (feather) and ladies waiting.

The other festivals of Aloha has events including the Hawaiian falsetto contest, a trade show in Hawaii, a steel guitar festival, musical concerts, Sam Choy’s Poke festival, hula performances and more. Flowers have a significant place in this festival and hence sending flowers on Aloha festivals is of importance.

The mission of aloha festivals is preserving as well as perpetuating the Hawaiian culture. The festivals are celebrated in pomp and grandeur as it is funded by public funds, donations, private sponsorships and many other official merchandise.

This is an old festival and is the largest statewide celebration conducted in the United States. Music and dance are integral parts of this unique tradition. This was created by the former Jaycees in the aim of honoring the cosmopolitan heritage and this now has become a state tradition.

Aloha festivals are now well-known and are integrated into the customs and culture. The festivals are celebrated well with appropriate funding and now the donations are tax deductible. However, many people send flowers on aloha festivals as a tribute to this grand occasion.
