Anthuriums are the tropicals that are most popular having a long vase life of nearly six weeks. The vase life of this flower exceeds the period of six weeks depending on the season and the variety. Anthuriums are native to tropical America and are herbaceous epiphytes.

There are over 800 species found from Mexico to Uruguay and northern Argentina. Anthurium is also called as Flamingo or Tail flower and Painted Tongue. Anthuriums are the choice of many people as they come in bright colors. Their spathes and the ornamental leaves are the main attraction.

Anthurium is a heart-shaped flower and comes with a waxy leaf from the base. The base has spadix (fleshy spikes) in which tiny flowers grow. The common colors of Anthuriums are red as well as all the shades of red. Sending Anthurium flowers for any occasion makes great decoration flowers.

Anthurium in Greek meant tail flower. Their stems are 15-20 inches based on the spathe size. If the spathe is bigger, the stem is longer. The Anthurium leaves are large and attractively colored. The stalk is long and slender and ends in fleshy column with other unisexual flowers.

There are leafy bracts in white, red, yellow, orange, pink or green colors and are the most popular foliage plants. Their flowering bracts are very attractive and are grown mainly for this reason. Anthuriums come in various varieties such as Velvet Leafed, flowering, hanging basket types and palmate leafed.

The Anthurium plant parts are poisonous, and if ingested can result in mild stomach disorders. The sap of this plant also causes skin irritation. The Anthurium inflorescence is popular for having a longer shelf life. Anthuriums are fun flowers and certainly provoke a smile. These flowers are shiny, think and wrinkled such that they look unreal and the leaves are glossy and large.

Anthuriums are sold as cut and potted flowers. As they have good vase life, people send Anthurium flowers as gift to others. Storing in cool temperatures causes blackening. Instead, cutting ½ inch of the stem after every 5 days and soaking the flower heads for 2 hours keeps the flower fresh. Anthuriums come in burgundy, pink, red, white, green, orange and brown shades.
