Agapanthus

About Agapanthus

Agapanthus is also known as African lily belongs to the Amaryllidaceous family. This flower acquired its name from Greek for love and flower. Among nine species of South African herbs, Agapanthus Orientalis and Africanus are the main two varieties that are used by florists.

These are tubular flowers having large round heads at the top. They are blue or white in color and the top of each flower is elegant, tall and a leafless stem. It has its origin in South Africa and belongs to the showy perennials of the onion family. Summer is the main season, but there are few varieties available early April as well as in late December.

Sending Agapanthus flowers in a bunch for some occasion gives a pleasant feeling and is possible as it is available throughout the year. Agapanthus is available throughout the year with a limited supply and the peak can be referred to as May to August. The color shades are purple, blue and white.

Agapanthus looks attractive even when it is not flowering. This flower resembles lily and are ideal to grow in containers, garden as well as houseplants. These flowers grow better in a container in a crowded condition. Their roots when crowded grow into lots of flowers. They make lovely indoor plants and can last in a vase for seven days.

Send agapanthus flowers as gifts for some occasion as they make memorable gifts. The heads of the dried seeds also look very attractive. These African lilies can grow in well-drained soil such that it consists two parts such as one part is leaf mold and the other part is well-decayed manure. A single rhizome can be planted in containers such that it can show active growth. They also grow well in cold hardy zones as they are planted deeper than usual.

These roots can be divided in spring by cutting rhizomes with a knife. These plants will bloom to their full only after a year or so. In spring seeds can be sown, but such plants will bloom only after the third year. The varieties of Agapanthus are africanus, umbellatus, campanulatus, praecox, orientalis, inapertus, mooreanus, inapertus, caulescens and pendulus.
